Mercury Opera To Present ‘Carmen’ In 5 Locations Throughout Alberta

Mercury Opera is set to showcase Bizet’s “Carmen” in five different locations across Alberta, Canada this August.

The opera will star Puerto Rican mezzo Laura Virella with Boris Derow and Jeffrey Strand alternating as Don José and El Dancairo. Jorge Luis Trabanco will be Escamillo. Other cast members include Elise Noyes, Dacia Gramlick, Sandra Flores Strand, Martin Galba, Alia Amad, and Allan Cabral de Sà.

Per a press release, “The performance venues are exciting and eclectic;  a downtown Edmonton diner, southern bar/restaurant off Whyte Ave, a saloon in the Ghost Town of Wayne, Alberta and a barbecue/ live music establishment in downtown Calgary.”

The run opens at the Edmonton Downtown on August 1, 2,3, 7, 8,9, 10, 14, and 15. For these performances, the opera’s first half will be performed at The Commodore before the action shifts to the Casa Pedro (Chez Pierre Cabaret) for Part two.

A matinee performance will take place at Have Mercy in Edmonton Strathcona on August 4. This showcase encourages audiences of all ages.

The opera will get a fully staged performance at The Last Chance Saloon in Wayne, Alberta on August 11; the same will occur at The Palomino Smokehouse in Calgary, Alberta on August 17, 2019.

The opera will be updated to modern day El Paso / Juarez and audience members are encouraged to wear their rodeo gear.
