By Francisco Salazar

The first International Waiblingen Opera Workshop has chosen 13 singers from eight countries to work with Melanie Diener and Thomas Hampson.

The workshop announced that the singers come from Germany, Spain, USA, Israel, Russia, Serbia, Korea, and China and range the ages of 22 and 32.

The young artists will have the opportunity to work intensively with the Deiner and Hampson and present the results in a grand final concert with the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra under the musical direction of Dan Ettinger. Each participant will also get accommodation in host families, travel expenses and participation in the Opera Workshop covered through a scholarship.

Deiner said in a press release, “Waiblingen is a cultural city with numerous initiatives for art and music. Young artists in particular need as many opportunities to work and perform as possible in order to develop further. With our first ‘International Opera Workshop’ we can offer exactly that. We want to develop techniques and musical interpretations with the participants in a targeted manner.”
Meanwhile, Hampson said, “So much of what happens on stage and inspires the audience has been preceded by a long process of intensive learning and preparation. Young artists first have to develop all the skills they need for a professional career… I consider it a pleasure, a privilege and a sign of confidence that I can help young colleagues to acquire the skills they need for a long and successful career.”

The opera workshop will begin on Sept. 23, 2019, and run through the 28, 2019 with workshop rehearsals open to the public.
