The Opernhaus Zürich has announced the appointment of Matthias Schulz as its new intendant, effective during the 2025-26 season.

Schulz will succeed Andreas Homoki in his new position and will begin working with the company on August 1, 2024 to ensure a smooth transition.

“By opting for Matthias Schulz, we have been able to win a very prominent cultural mediator and experienced theater director for the management of the Opernhaus Zürich,” said Chairman of the Board of Directors of Opernhaus Zürich AG Markus Notter. “The search committee decided unanimously in favor of Matthias Schulz’s appointment following a targeted, selective procedure. We are very pleased to have found an excellent successor for Andreas Homoki and are certain that he will successfully lead the largest Swiss cultural institution, a flagship of international music theater, on the path of opening up into the future.”

“I am incredibly happy about the election as the new Intendant of the Opernhaus Zürich. The opera house, together with the Ballett Zürich and Philharmonia Zürich stands for the highest musical and staging quality, a lively and diverse opera repertoire, impulses through modernity and the cultivation of historical performance practice,” said Matthias Schulz of the appointment.

Schulz was born in Bad Reichenhall in Bavaria, Germany in 1977. He has had a longstanding relationship with the Salzburg Festival where he has served as project manager, concert, and media officer. In 2009 he took the position of Head of concert planning and in 2012 Schulz moved over to the Mozarteum Foundation in Salzburg as Artistic Director and Commercial Director. Schulz was also appointed Intendant of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin in 2015.
