Matthew Aucoin’s ‘Crossing’ Gets Additional Performance in West Coast Premiere

By David Salazar

Matthew Aucoin’s “Crossing” is set to get an additional performance from LA Opera Off Grand.

The performance, given at the Wallis Annenberg Center for Performing Arts, will be featured on May 26, now in addition to the originally scheduled one on May 25, which is the work’s West Coast Premiere.

The additional performance came about as a result of high ticket demand for the original showcase. The presentation is slated to be conducted by Aucoin, who composed the opera; he is currently LA Opera’s Artist in Resident.

The opera explores Walt Whitman’s interaction with wounded soldiers during the American Civil War and is set to star baritone Roy Gilfry as Walt Whitman. The opera will also star Brenton Ryan, who plays John Wormley, a wounded soldier tended to by Whitman. Gilfry has worked with LA Opera since 1986 while Ryan is an alumnus of the organization’s Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program and has appeared with such organizations as the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera, and Lyric Opera of Chicago.
