Matilda Sterby Wins Schymberg Award 2022

Matilda Sterby has been named the winner of the Schymberg Award 2022.

Per the jury, “for her beautiful lyric soprano voice, her clear musicality and her exciting stage presence, Matilda Sterby wins First Prize.”

Sterby is the second winner of the award created to commemorate the legendary career of Swedish soprano Hjördis Schymberg; the first winner was Sofie Asplund.

The final of the competition took place in Tonhallen Sundvall and included the participation of the Nordic Chamber Orchestra under the music direction of Eric Solén. Other participants at this year’s final included Elisabet Einarsdóttir, Jessica Elevant, Theodor Uggla, and Emilia Utter.

Next up, Sterby will perform La Contessa in Staatsoper Hannover’s production of “Le Nozze di Figaro.” She is also slated for performances at the Stadttheater Klagenfurt. She has appeared with such companies as Gothenburg Opera, the Wermland Opera, and the Dala-Floda Opera Festival, among others. She is represented by Svanholm Artists.
