Mastervoices to Present ‘The Grapes of Wrath’

By Francisco Salazar

MasterVoices is set to close its 2023-24 season on April 17 at Carnegie Hall with a revised concert version of “The Grapes of Wrath.”

The opera by composer Ricky Ian Gordon and librettist Michael Korie is based on the epic novel of the same name by Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck.

Set in the Great Depression of the 1930s, it tells the story of the Joad family, Oklahoma sharecroppers who, along with thousands of others, become refugees in their own country. Mastervoices previously presented the opera in 2010 and was the first work Ted Sperling brought to the group.

The opera will star soprano Mikaela Bennett, baritone John Brancy, baritone Nathan Gunn, mezzo-soprano Margaret Lattimore, baritone Malcolm MacKenzie, Broadway star Bryonha Marie, baritone Kyle Oliver, and bass-baritone Christian Pursell. The production will also star tenor Victor Starsky and baritone Schyler Vargas.

The sound design is by Scott Lehrer. Tracy Christensen is the costume designer, and the lighting design is by Brian Tovar. Ted Sperling conducts the MasterVoices Chorus and the Orchestra of St. Luke’s.
