MasterVoices to Present Original Version of ‘Carmen’ in NYC

By David Salazar

MasterVoices is set to present a concert staging of the original version of Bizet’s “Carmen” on April 2, 2020 at the Rose Theater at Hazz at Lincoln Center.

The opera, which was written by Halévy and Meilhac, will star Peabody Southwell as Carmen with tenor Noah Stewart as Don José and Nicole Cabell as Micaëla. Steven LaBrie stars as Escamillo. Other cast members include Maria Brea, Ceesar Delgado, Michael Kelly, Adam Lau, and Kimberly Sogoika.

Sammi Cannold will direct the production with Gustavo Zajac working as choreographer. Ted Sperling will conduct.

“I’m exceptionally excited to be bringing ‘Carmen’ to life with MasterVoices and under Ted Sperling’s tremendous leadership,” stated Cannold in a press release. “This production aims to explore Carmen’s relationship to freedom, manipulation, and liberation in service of probing at what power meant for women in 19th century Europe and more importantly, how we view that power now.

“Ted and I are so fortunate to be joined by such phenomenal performers as well as our choreographer Gustavo Zajac, whose work in the piece will revolve around bringing the above narrative to life through lyrical and flamenco dance.”
