MasterVoices Details 2021-22 Season Featuring Mikaela Bennett, Tariq Al-Sabir, and Vanessa Williams

By Chris Ruel

MasterVoices Artistic Director Ted Sperling has announced details about the company’s 2021-22 season.

In the official press release, Sperling said, “We are delighted to return for our 80th season to our historic home, Carnegie Hall, where MasterVoices, then The Collegiate Chorale, first began. More than ever, we yearn to experience the powerful emotions felt by the singers and listeners alike when more than 100 voices sing in a great acoustic setting.”

After a two-year halt on live performances, the company has put together a season of three exciting concerts that include holiday favorites, show tunes, and a world premiere. Here is what audiences can look forward to this season.

MasterVoices will present “A Joyful Noise,” featuring soprano Mikaela Bennett, and Take 6, an a cappella gospel music group. Northwell Health Nurse Choir, a group comprising nurses who banded together in song to support the Nurse Heroes initiative will also join MasterVoices on stage. Music listed on the program includes traditional carols, along with excerpts from “Myths and Hymns,” the central project of the company’s 2020-21 season.

Performance Date: Dec. 6, 2021

Next up is the company’s semi-staged production of Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents’ “Anyone Can Whistle,” starring Vanessa Williams. The work hasn’t been performed in New York since 2010. The 1964 musical is an underground favorite that spares few targets with its satire about a community that places its faith in an unreliable leader.

Performance Date: March 10, 2022

The season concludes with an outdoor concert featuring the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, soprano Shereen Pimentel performing two songs from “Les nuits d’été,” a song cycle by Berlioz set to six poems by Théophile Gautier, and the world premiere presentation of composer/vocalist’s Tariq Al-Sabir’s newly commissioned work. Music by Mendelssohn, de Prez, Ricky Ian Gordon, Barber, and Sondheim is also on the program as MasterVoices celebrates the joys of summer in New York City.

Performance Date: June 2022. Date and venue to be announced.
