MassOpera & OperaHub Join Forces to Re-Imagine New Opera Workshop

By David Salazar

MassOpera and OperaHub are joining forces to re-imagine a New Opera Workshop (NOW) with the intent of producing a new chamber opera.

NOW will support the writing and development of new chamber operas with an emphasis on creating diverse roles for women.

“When I joined MassOpera as Producing Artistic Director, I knew that developing a space to play, create and imagine new opera would be integral to our work,” stated MassOpera Director of New Works Cassandra Lovering in a press release. “Through NOW, our companies will explore the ways in which new work is made by tailoring each process to empower the creators. In OperaHub, MassOpera finds a partner that embodies the same commitment to creating new, inclusive opera.”

Submissions commence on June 1, 2020 and run through July 15, 2020. OperaHub General Director Christie Gibson and MassOpera Director of New Works Cassandra Lovering will provide blind reviews of submissions.

The New Opera Workshop was created in 2018 and saw MassOpera partner with the Washington National Opera and Chicago Opera Theater to produce two orchestral workshops to help advance opera premieres with these major entities.
