Mason Bates & Mercury Soul Release ‘Barbara Strozzi Remix’

By David Salazar

Composer Mason Bates and his non-profit Mercury Soul have released the second episode of his music video series entitled “Mason Bates x Barbara Strozzi Remix.”

The video showcases Strozzi’s “Che Si Puo Fare” in a 21st century light and stars soprano Marnie Breckenridge, violinists Matthew Vince and Annamarie Arai, violist Ivo Bokulic, and cellist Bryon Hogan.

“To bring this surreal, electro-acoustic reimagination of an iconic Baroque aria to life, we couldn’t have cast a more perfect soprano than Marnie Breckenridge.  Her clear and powerful voice suits the music of today’s composers as well as those from centuries before, and that mastery of old and new was exactly what was needed in this short film,” composer Mason Bates told OperaWire about the project. “Beyond the stunning qualities of her voice, Marnie brings superb stage presence to her roles, and her acting ability is showcased in the way we filmed her.  The video was actually filmed at twice the speed and then slowed down to half-speed, resulting in different qualities of motion in dress, hair, and facial expression.  The audio was recorded ahead of time at Saint Joseph’s Society for the Arts, so we had the freedom to experiment with a variety of shooting techniques.
