The Maryland Opera has announced the appointment of its new General Director, Jason Buckwalter.
Buckwalter is a well-known member of Baltimore’s classical music and theater community, performing with companies such as Baltimore Opera, Lyric Opera Baltimore, Baltimore Concert Opera, Young Victorian Theatre Company, Annapolis Chorale, Annapolis Opera, and Washington National Opera.
He first joined the Maryland Opera as an administrative aide in 2018, a year after the former Lyric Opera Baltimore closed its doors.
In a statement, Buckwalter said, “My passion for opera has been a constant in my life, but moving from a performing focus to an administrative role has only served to ignite that passion further. To me, the future of opera is in education and outreach, seeking a way to connect with our community.”
This season the company is set to present “Morte e Vita” featuring the final acts of Puccini’s “La Bohème,” “Madama Butterfly,” and “Manon Lescaut.” It will also present “Carmen.”
