Mary McCabe, Wendy Ferguson, Sinéad O’Kelly Headline Northern Ireland Opera’s ‘The Salon Series’

Northern Ireland Opera has announced the launch of “The Salon Series.”

The series will feature six performances around historic venues throughout Northern Ireland. The series will get a total of six performances throughout 2023 for a total of 36 showcases overall.

“’The Salon Series’ is a [program] I’ve been thinking about since I joined Northern Ireland Opera in 2021 as Artistic Director,” said Cameron Menzies, the Northern Ireland Opera CEO and Artistic Director in an official press statement. “These intimate productions, staged in the round will be a wonderful musical experience for the audience and they enable us to tour and showcase some of the island’s most accomplished artists, including opera singers, music theatre performers and pianists. The Salon Series sees Northern Ireland Opera back to touring across the country during 2023, giving audiences across the country the opportunity to experience the drama and spectacle of live performance in some of the our most celebrated and recognizable locations and venues.”

The series kicks off with “La Voix Humaine” at the Throne Room at Hillsborough Castle.” Soprano Mary McCabe stars alongside pianist David Quigley.

Performance Date: Feb. 11, 2023 (only inaugural run dates will be displayed here)

Next up is “Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered” starring soprano Wendy Ferguson and pianist Ruth McGinley. The showcase will take place at St Columb’s Hall in Derry / Londonderry.

Performance Date: Feb. 18, 2023

“Sea Wrack” will feature Irish Art songs as performed b soprano Susie Gibbons, mezzo-soprano Jenny Bourke, tenor Michael Bell, baritone Seamus Brady, and pianist Frasier Hickland. The performance venue will be St Joseph’s in Sailortown.

Performance Date: Feb. 19, 2023

Next up will be “The Lost Boy: Street Scenes and Soldier Tales” with vocalist Conor Quinn at The New Orpheus at Hill Street in Belfast.

Performance Date: Feb. 23, 2023

Baritone Brendan Collins will perform Mussorgsky’s “Songs and Dances of Death” while mezzo Margaret Bridge will present Mahler’s “Kindertotenlieder.” Pianist Tristan Russcher accompanies the singers at the Circle and C Wing, Crumlin Road Goal in Belfast.

Performance Date: March 8, 2023

“The Salon Series” comes to a close with mezzo Sinéad O’Kelly and pianist Bryan Evans taking on Berlioz’s “Les Nuits D’Été” at Courtyard Theatre in Newtownabbey.
