Marlen Nahhas Leads ‘Florencia en el Amazonas’ at Opera San José

Opera San José will conclude its 40th Anniversary season with the Bay Area premiere of Daniel Catán’s “Florencia en el Amazonas.”

The opera, which was co-commissioned by Houston Grand Opera, Los Angeles Opera, and Seattle Opera and which recently made its Metropolitan Opera premiere, will be performed at the California Theatre as Opera San José’s first Spanish-language opera.

The opera will star soprano Marlen Nahhas in the title role of Florencia Grimaldi, soprano Melissa Sondhi as Rosalba, and mezzo-soprano Guadalupe Paz as Paula. It will also include baritone Efraín Solís as Alvaro, tenor César Delgado as Arcadio, baritone Ricardo José Rivera as Riolobo, and bass-baritone Vartan Gabrielian as the Captain. Opera San José Director of Music Joseph Marcheso will conduct the production by Crystal Manich.

“Florencia en el Amazonas” is set to open on April 20 and runt through May 5, 2024.
