Mariusz Kwiecien Withdraws From Royal Opera House’s ‘Don Carlo

The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden has announced that baritone Mariusz Kwiecien has withdrawn from his previously scheduled performances in the company’s production of “Don Carlo.”

He will be replaced by baritone Luca Micheletti, who will make his Royal Opera House debut on June 29, 2020; he is also set to take on the role of the Rodrigo, Marquis de Posa on July 3, 7, and 10, 2020.

Micheletti has appeared with such companies as the Teatro Lirico di Caligari, the Ravenna Festival, Opera Australia,  and the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino.

Micheletti will join a cast that includes Michael Fabiano in the title role, Hibla Gerzmava as Elisabeta, Ferruccio Furlanetto as Filippo II, and Elina Garanca as Princess Eboli. Richard Farnes is set to conduct the remaining performances.

The performances scheduled for July 13, 16, 19 will include Plácido Domingo as Rodrigo.

This is the latest in a series of cancelations for Kwiecien. He recently withdrew from the Met Opera’s production of “Le Nozze di Figaro.”
