Marina Rebeka & Piotr Beczala Lead Top 6 Operas To See This Weekend Internationally (8/23-25)

Stars, season finales, and some of the greatest operas in the standard repertoire are set to take over your weekend. Here are our picks for the operas to see this weekend.
Luisa Miller – Salzburg Festival, Austria
Plácido Domingo returns to the Salzburg stage in a concert performance of one of his recent roles. He takes on the role of Miller with Nino Machaidze in the title role and Piotr Beczala, who had great success at the Met in this opera, as Rodolfo; Bezcala also performed the role at the Liceu where he encored his aria. They are joined by Roberto Tagliavini, Yulia Matochkina, and John Relyea.
James Conlon conducts the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg.
Simon Boccanegra – Salzburg Festival, Austria
Luca Salsi sings the title role in Verdi’s late period work alongside Marina Rebeka as Amelia Grimaldi, René Pape as Jacopo Fiesco, Charles Castronovo as Gabriele Adorno, and André Heyboer as Paolo Albiani.
Valery Gergiev conducts Andreas Kriegenburg’s production and Vienna Philharmonic.
Il Barbiere di Siviglia – Teatro Mayor Julio Mario Santo Domingo, Colombia
Valeriano Lanchas celebrates his 25th anniversary on stage returning to his hometown. The bass-baritone sings alongside rising stars Pablo Martínez and Paola Leguizamón, who makes her anticipated Teatro de la Zarzuela debut this season.
Borja Quiza and Sergio Martínez round out the cast with Pedro Salazar directing the new production and Alejandro Roca leading in the pit.
Demetrio e Polibio – Rossini Opera Festival, Italy
Jessica Pratt leads a starry cast in the final night of the famed Pesaro festival with a cast that includes Cecilia Molinari, Juan Francisco Gatell, and Riccardo Fassi. Paolo Arrivabeni conducts the Davide Livermore production.
Werther – Gran Teatro Nacional, Peru
Rising star Jonathan Tetelman sings the title role of Massenet’s masterpiece in a production by Alejandro Chacon. The production also stars Carol García as Charlotte. Ximena Agurto as Sophie, and Xavier Fernandez as Albert. Oliver Diaz conducts.
Breaking the Waves – Edinburgh International Festival, United Kingdom
Missy Mazzoli’s acclaimed opera makes its European debut with a cast that includes Sydney Mancasola, Duncan Rock, Wallis Giunta, Susan Bullock, Elgan Llŷr Thomas, Byron Jackson, Freddie Tong, Frank Church, and David Lynn. The production is set to be directed by Tom Morris and will be conducted by Stuart Stratford.
