Marina Rebeka, Julia Bullock, J’Nai Bridges & Freddie De Tommaso Lead Dutch National Opera’s 2022-23 Season
By Francisco SalazarThe Dutch National Opera has announced its 2022-23 season with productions, four world premieres, two European premieres, six new productions, and four family operas.
The season opens with a revival of Bizet’s “Carmen” with Jordan de Souza conducting a cast that includes J’Nai Bridges, Stanislas de Barbeyrac, Lukasz Golinski, and Adriana González.
Performance Dates: Sept. 3 – 22, 2022
Engelbert Humperdinck’s “Kongskinder” will be conducted by Marc Albrecht and directed by Christof Loy. Daniel Behle, Olga Kulchinska, Josef Wagner, and Doris Soffel star.
Performance Dates: Oct. 6 – 22, 2022
Vasco Mendonça’s “The Girl, The Hunter, and The Wolf” will have its world premiere and will be directed by Inne Goris.
Performance Dates: Oct. 15 – 23, 2022
Jeanine Tesori & Tazewell Thompson’s “Blue” makes its European premiere with Tazewell Thompson conducting. Kenneth Kellog, Elizabeth Llewellyn, Thando Mjandana, and Will Liverman star.
Performance Dates: Nov. 7 – 22, 2022
“Operetta Land” gets a new production featuring music by Strauss Jr, Offenbach, and Sullivan. Lorenzo Viotti and Aldert Vermeulen conducts the production by Steef de Jong. Elenora Hu, Michael Wilmering, and Ian Castro star.
Performance Dates: Nov. 20 – Dec 30, 2022
Tamara Wilson stars in Puccini’s “Turandot” with Kristina Mkhitaryan, Ruzan Mantashyan, Najmiddin Mavlyanov, and Martin Muehle. Lorenzo Viotti conducts Barrie Kosky’s new production.
Performance Dates: Dec. 2 – 30, 2022
Lucas Wiegerink’s “Het Lijflied” will have its world premiere with Alma Terrasse directing.
Performance Dates: September 2022 – January 2023
Händel’s “Giulio Cesare” will be led by Emmanuelle Haïm in a new production by Calixto Bieito. Julie Fuchs, Emily d’Angelo, Christophe Dumaux, and Teresa Iervolino star.
Performance Dates: Jan. 16 – Feb. 5, 2023
Verdi’s Requiem will be led by Eun Sun Kim in a new production by Christian Spuck. Federica Lombardi, Guanqun Yu, Yulia Matochkina, Agnieszka Rehlis, Freddie De Tommaso, and Alexander Vinogradov star.
Performance Dates: Feb. 9 – 25, 2023
Opera Forward Festival 2023
Misha Kiria, Elena Vassilieva, Marcel Beekman, and Helena Rasker star in Alexander Raskatov’s “Animal Farm.” The world premiere production will be directed by Damiano Michieletto.

Julia Bullock stars in Tyshawn’ Sorey’s “Perle Noire: Meditations for Joséphine” with Peter Sellars directing.
Performance Dates: March 9 – 13, 2023
Mart van Berckel directs the world premiere of “ÄNDERE DIE WELT!” by Leonard Evers and Mart van Berckel.
Performance dates: March 10 – 12, 2023
Maria Bengtsson, Angela Brower, and Christof Fischesser star in Strauss’ “Der Rosenkavalier” with Lorenzo Viotti conducting.
Performance Dates: April 13 – May 2, 2023
Marina Rebeka, Aigul Akhmetshina, and Ismael Jordi star in Donizetti’s “Maria Stuarda” with Enrique Mazzola conducting the new production by Jetske Mijnssen.

Eric Robillard directs “BE OPERA XL” with music by Puccini, Verdi, Mozart, and Monteverdi. Ton Meijer, Marijje van Stralen, Makudu Senaoana, and Liza Lozica star.
Performance Dates: May 24 – 28, 2023
The season concludes with Johanni van Oostrum, Annette Dasch, Raehann Bryce-Davis, Pavel Černoch, and Maxim Kuzmin-Karavaev starring in Antonín Dvořák’s “Rusalka.” Joana Mallwitz conducts Philipp Stölzl’s new production.
