This week audiences get to explore rarely performed music by some of the greatest singers in the world.

Here is a look at this week’s new releases.

Credo

Prima Classic releases Marina Rebeka’s new album featuring spiritual pieces by Bach, Mozart, Verdi, Mascagni, Handel, Purcell, Brahms, Schubert, Fauré, Gounod, Saint-Saëns, Albinoni, Durante, Stradella, and Caccini (Vavilov). The album includes Grammy Award-winner Sinfonietta Riga along with the world-renowned Latvian Radio Choir, conducted by Maestro Modestas Pitrėnas.

Hidden Treasure 

Christian Immler and Helmut Deutsch dedicate their new album to the works of Hans Gál. The composer who wrote about 100 songs before leaving secondary school, later destroyed them, along with all his other works composed prior to 1910, but between 1910 and 1921 he wrote many more. Except for the five songs of Op. 33, these were never published. In their new album, Immler and Deutsch perform 26 of the ‘laid-aside’ songs.

A labor of love for the performers, the project has had the support of the composer’s family and was produced by Hans Gál’s grandson, Simon Fox-Gál.

Verklärte Nacht

Chandos releases an album that explores poetically inspired early-20th-century music from Vienna. The album includes Schönberg’s tone poem and Oskar Fried s Dehmel’s poem. Edward Gardner conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra with Christine Rice and Stuart Skelton. The album also includes “Fieber” from Franz Lehár, and Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s “Lieder des Abschieds.”

Le Nozze in Baviera

Naxos releases Orlando de Lassus’s “Le Nozze in Baviera,” a hypothetical reconstruction of the music performed during the eighteen-day celebration of the marriage of Wilhelm V of Bavaria to Renate of Lorraine in 1568. Musicologist and conductor Eric Rice leads the recording with his Ensemble Origo.
