Marina Rebeka, Anita Rachvelishvili & Christian Van Horn Lead Dutch National Opera’s 2020-21 Season

The Dutch National Opera has announced its 2020-21 season featuring new productions and a number of world premieres.

Boito’s “Mefistofele” opens the season with a new production by Tatjana Gürbaca. Marco Armiliato conducts the production with Christian Van Horn in the title role, Charles Castronovo, Olga Busuioc, and Guanqun Yu.

Performance Dates: Sept. 5-24, 2020

Paula Murrihy, Sandrine Piau, Tuomas Pursio, Lilian Farahani, Markus Nykanen, Jukka Rasilainen, Lucy Shelton, and Vilma Jääskeläinen star in the Netherlands premiere of Kaija Saariaho and Sof Oksanen’s “Innocence.” Susanna Mälkki conducts the new opera.

Performance Dates: Oct. 7-18, 2020

Leonard Evers’s “Kriebel” is revived in Caecilia Thunnissen’s production.

Performance Dates: Oct. 10-18, 2020

Davide Luciano, Ruzan Mantashyan, Natalia Tanasii, Ying Fang, Riccardo Fassi, and Polly Leech star in a revival of Mozart’s “Le Nozze di Figaro” conducted by Riccardo Minasi.

Performance Dates: Nov. 7-26, 2020

Dmitri Tcherniakov directs a new production of Verdi’s “Aida” with Elena Stikhina in the title role. Andrea Battistoni conducts the new production of the opera written by Ghislanzoni, which also stars Rafał Siwek, Anita Rachvelishvili, Yonghoon Lee, Mika Kares, and Markus Brück.

Performance Dates: Dec. 3-28, 2020

Gerald Barry and Gerald Barry’s “Alice’s Adventures Under Ground” gets its Netherlands premiere with Karen Kamensek conducting.

Performance Dates: Dec. 19, 2020-Jan. 2, 2021

Sarah Connolly, Franco Fagioli, Ying Fang, Gianluca Buratto, Tim Mead, Eric Jurenas, Nahuel di Pierro, and Sam Carl star in a new production of Handel’s “Agrippina.” Ottavio Dantone conducts Barrie Kosky’s new production.

Performance Dates: Jan. 14-29, 2021

Brian Mulligan stars in a new production of Wagner’s “Der Fliegende Holländer” directed by François Girard. The production, which is set to be conducted by Joana Mallwitz, will also star Ain Anger, Elza van den Heever, Benjamin Bruns, Katia Ledoux, and Omer Kobiljak.

Leonard Evers and Flora Verbrugge’s “GOUD!” gets a new production by Waut Koeken.

Performance Dates: Feb. 20-28, 2021

Opera Forward Festival 2021

Ramsey Nasr, Sean Panikkar, Sarah Connolly, Bastiaan Everink, and Rafał Siwek star in double bill of Stravinsky’s “Oedipus Rex” and Samy Moussa’s world premiere “From Antigone.” Erik Nielsen conducts the production by Wayne McGregor.

Performance Dates: March 10-27, 2021

“Club Faust,” a work made up of music by Schubert, Gounod, and Luke Deane makes its world premiere with Belle van Heerikhuizen directing and Romain Bischof conducting.

Performance Dates: March 17-21, 2021

Michel van der Aa and Michel van der Aa’s “Upload” makes its world premiere with Julia Bullock and Roderick Williams starring. Otto Tausk conducts Michel van der Aa’s production.

Performance Dates: March 20-26, 2021

Christof Loy directs a new production Lehár’s “The Merry Widow” starring Annette Dasch. Marko Letonja conducts the production which also stars Henk Poort, Theresa Kronthaler, Thomas Oliemans, Norman Reinhardt, José Pazos, and Sunnyi Melles.

Performance Dates: April 17-May 5, 2021

Marina Rebeka stars in a new production of Donizetti’s “Anna Bolena.” Enrique Mazzola conducts the new production by Jetske Mijnssen, which also stars Roberto Tagliavini, J’Nai Bridges, Ismael Jordi, and Cecilia Molinari.

Performance Dates: May 6-30, 2021

Anna Stéphany, John Osborn, and Kyle Ketelsen star in Berlioz’s “La Damnation de Faust.” François-Xavier Roth conducts the new production by Calixto Bieito.
