On May 28, Marin Alsop returned to “The Kelly Clarkson Show” as a surprise guest to invite Cleveland State’s School of Music student, Kayla Selan, to shadow her at Carnegie Hall.
Clarkson and Alsop started the segment by discussing the underrepresentation of women in classical music. Alsop shared how she did not have female conductors to look to as a young musician and discussed the Taki Alsop Conducting Fellowship and #PurpleBaton campaign. After giving a brief demonstration on conducting she left the stage, and Selan, a conducting student who just finished her sophomore year, took the hot seat.
Selan expressed her passion for conducting and desire for working with women pursuing leadership roles in classical music. Clarkson asked Selan, “So, if you could follow anyone’s career, who would it be?” After naming Alsop, she was surprised with Alsop appearing on stage and personally invited Selan to join and shadow her the following evening at Carnegie Hall during the rehearsal and performance with the Philadelphia Orchestra. Alsop will conduct Beethoven’s “Symphony” No. 7 and Wynton Marsalis’ “Symphony” No. 4.
Selan told the Ashland Source, “I am absolutely thrilled to get the opportunity to shadow Marin Alsop at Carnegie Hall. She is my biggest inspiration and getting to see her conduct in person is so exciting. Conducting is the only thing I want to do. It’s my passion. Marin Alsop has paved the way for so many women to conduct and I am grateful that she is showing me the way.”
