Pittsburgh Festival Opera has announced a brand new season entitled “UNSTAGED: Pandemic Season Festival.”

The updated slate will take place between July 10-26 and features a number of online events, live digital performances, and inside looks.

“We were disappointed that the pandemic upended our fabulous planned season,” said Artistic Director Marianne Cornetti in a press release. “While we’ve moved some of the productions to later in the year and next season, we wanted to bring the majesty of opera, the beauty of the human voice, and the fresh works that mean it’s summer festival season to Pittsburgh opera fans. This is a year like no other, so our team worked hard to put together a festival like no other.”

The showcase will kick off with a Candid Concert starring Cornetti as she takes on music ranging from Verdi to Broadway. She will perform alongside Walter Morales and have a conversation with Anna Singer.

On Saturdays, audiences will get a chance to see conversations between a number of major artists from around the opera world. First, up will be a dialogue between Carl Tanner and Danielle Pastin.

Rob Frankenberry, Rob Chafin, Nancy Maultsby, and Maria Spacagna will engage in conversation.

Finally, Christine Goerke and Alexandra Loutsion will converse.

Members of the Pittsburgh Festival Orchestra will perform chamber concerts on Sundays.

The festival will present “I, Too, Sing,” a concert that celebrates the lives and works of vocal composers of the African Diaspora. The performance will include participation by Kevin Short, Anqwenique Kinsel, Cameron Barnett, Thomas W. Douglas, and Naomi André.

The company will present a children’s version of Dvorak’s “Rusalka.”

There will be a composer spotlight that focuses on the work of Mark Adamo. Cornetti will interview the composer alongside director Derrick R. Brown and conductor Robert Frankenberry.

Young Artists will take center stage in an Online Young Artists Program. Audiences will get a chance to go behind the scenes into online voice lessons and coaching to get a look at how the program is run.

It concludes with the “Festival Finale,” which will feature a concert, cocktails, and conversation with Anna Singer and Robert Frankenberry hosting the event.
