Marian Anderson to Feature in New PBS Documentary ‘Voice of Freedom’

By Logan Martell

On February 15, 2021, AMERICAN EXPERIENCE will present the premiere of “Voice of Freedom,” a new documentary about renowned opera singer Marian Anderson.

Hosted by Renée Elise Goldsberry, “Voice of Freedom” will follow Anderson’s life story, culminating with her historic 1939 performance at the Lincoln Memorial when she was barred from singing at Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C. The work seeks to explore questions of talent, race, fame, democracy, and the American soul.

“Marian Anderson was an artist first and foremost. She did not seek to become an icon of the civil rights movement,” said Cameo George, AMERICAN EXPERIENCE executive producer in a press statement. “But when circumstances thrust themselves upon her, she did not waver, using her voice as a powerful force to transcend geographical, political and racial boundaries.”

“Voice of Freedom” will be available to watch on PBS, PBS’s official website, and the PBS Video App.
