‘Maria’ Wins American Society of Cinematographers Award

By Francisco Salazar

“Maria” has won the American Society of Cinematographers.

The award ceremony, which was held on Feb. 23, 2025, announced that Edward Lachman was given the 2025 theatrical feature film award for Pablo Larrian’s Maria Callas biopic.

Lachman beat out Jarin Blaschke for “Nosferatu,” Alice Brooks for “Wicked,” Lol Crawley for “The Brutalist,” Stéphane Fontaine for “Conclave,” Greig Fraser for “Dune: Part Two,” and Phedon Papamichael for “A Complete Unknown.”

The award is important as it generally predicts the future Oscar winner. Of the last five winners, four went on to win the Oscar. Only Mandy Walker, who won the ASC for “Elvis” in 2022 lost to James Friend for “All Quiet on the Western Front” at the Oscars. Friend was not nominated at the ASC.

This year, Lachman’s Oscar competition includes Lol Crawley, Greig Fraser, and Jarin Blaschke, all ASC nominees, and Paul Guilhaume, who was not nominated for the ASC.

“Maria” tells the story of one of the world’s most renowned artists and reimagines the legendary soprano in her final days in Paris.

The Academy Awards will be held on March 2 at the Dolby Theater.
