Maria José Siri Makes History at Ópera de las Palmas with Encore

By Francisco Salazar

Maria José Siri made history at the Ópera de las Palmas in a production of “Adriana Lecouvreur” performing an encore.

Siri gave a historic encore performance of the aria “Io son l’umile ancella” during the March 25 performance and became the first female singer in the history of the opera house to perform an encore of an aria.

The Ópera de Las Palmas is one of the few theaters in the world currently performing in front of an audience. The theater is following a strict security protocol in order to reduce the risk of spreading the Covid-19 virus.

The current production of “Adriana Lecouvreur” was reduced to about two hours and is being performed without intermission. The opera will have its final performance on March 27 and also stars Sergio Escobar and Silvia Tro Santafe.

Siri is scheduled to sing “Adriana Lecouvreur” in a new production at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino next month. The soprano has performed at many of the great theaters in the world and is well known for her Verdi, Puccini, and Verismo repertoire.
