Maria Callas Biopic ‘Maria’ Eyes Venice Film Festival Debut

Pablo Larrain’s new Maria Callas biopic “Maria” will likely premiere at the Venice Film Festival.

Variety reports that Larraín’s film will launch at Lido after his previous two tragic female biopics “Spencer” starring Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana and “Jackie” with Natalie Portman as Kennedy Onassis debuted in Venice.

The film is among several titles that will likely premiere in Venice including “Joker 2: Folie à Deux,”  “Queer,” and “In the Hand of Dante.”

The new Callas biopic will also star Valeria Golino, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Pierfrancesco Favino, Alba Rohrwacher, and Haluk Bilginer. Steven Knight penned the script which is set to tell the tumultuous, beautiful, and tragic story of the life of the world’s greatest opera singer, relived and re-imagined during her final days in 1970s Paris.

Maria” is currently looking for U.S. Distribution.

The 81st Venice Film Festival will run from August 28 to Sept. 7, 2024.
