María Bayo Loses Appeal In Bilbao Case

By Francisco Salazar

The Supreme Court in Bilbao has rejected soprano María Bayo’s appeal.

Bayo challenged the Supreme Court after the institution imdenified the soprano with only € 3,366.66 after she sued the Bilbao opera for firing her from a production of “Don Giovanni” without notice during the 2016-17 season. The soprano appealed the decision, requesting € 126,000 for moral damages and losses.

With the loss of her appeal, the case has now been closed.

Bayo is a legendary Spanish coloratura soprano who has made a career of singing Zarzuela and opera. Among her signature roles are the title characgter of “Marina” as well as a number of operas by Rossini and Mozart. She is also the only Spanish singer in the history of the Salzburg Festival to perform all three Da Ponte Operas.

The soprano recently portrayed Maria Callas in “Masterclass.”
