Maria Agresta & Annalisa Stroppa Lead Teatro San Carlo’s ‘Anna Bolena’

The Teatro San Carlo di Napoli is set to open a production of Donizetti’s “Anna Bolena.”

The opera will be directed by Jetske Mijnssen in a co-production with the Dutch National Opera and the Palau de les Arts. Riccardi Frizza conducts a cast that includes Annalisa Stroppa, Maria Agresta, Alexander Vinogradov, and René Barbera.

Regarding the opera, Frizza noted, “The score’s elevated, elegant style is a great challenge for performers. In ‘Anna Bolena,’ Donizetti draws out the scenes in length, with complex, elaborate forms culminating, thanks to Romani’s admirable libretto, in true romantic catharsis. The grand final scene highlights how Donizetti, elaborating its structures starting from conventional ones, finds the most profound expression which had eluded him on his previous attempts.”

“Anna Bolena” is set to be performed from June 8 to 17, with the first performance dedicated to Maria Callas, one of the great exponents of the title role.
