Marcelo Álvarez Replaces Fabio Sartori In Barcelona

The Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona has announced a cast change for its upcoming production of “Pagliacci.”

The company announced that Marcelo Alvarez will replace Fabio Sartori as Canio who has canceled due to personal reasons.

Álvarez is well known for his interpretation of Canio as he has performed the role with the Metropolitan Opera and at the Budapest Summer Festival. This season he is set to perform at the Teatro Carlo Felice, Staatsoper Hamburg and Metropolitan Opera In “Tosca,” “Manon Lescaut,” and “Adriana Lecouvreur.”

Álvarez joins a cast that includes Dinara Alieva and Ángel Ódena. He will alternate in the opera with Roberto Alagna, who also sings “Cavalleria Rusticana” during the run. Additionally Álvarez sings one performance with Alessandra Kurzak as Nedda.

”Cavalleria Rusticana” and “Pagliacci” opens on Dec. 5 and also stars Teodor Ilincai, Elena Pankaratova and Oksana Dyka. Conductor Henrik Nánási leads the double bill.
