Marcelo Álvarez, Kristīne Opolais, Eva-Maria Westbroek, Aleksandrs Antoņenko, Ramón Vargas & Cellia Costea Lead Greek National Opera’s Second Half of 2021-22 Season

The Greek National Opera has announced the second half of its 2021-22 season, featuring a number of operas performed by international stars.

Here is the full slate.

Stavros Niarchos Hall

The second half of the season opens with Umberto Giordano’s “Andrea Chénier” featuring Cellia Costea and Eva-Maria Westbroek as Maddalena di Coigny; Dimitri Platanias and Elchin Azizov as Carlo Gérard; and Marcelo Puente and Marcelo Álvarez in the title role. The cast will be rounded out by Marissia Papalexiou, Chrysanthi Spitadi, Julia Souglacou, Harris Andrianos, Dionysios Sourbis, Yanni Yannissis, Vangelis Maniatis, George Mattheakakis, Yannis Kalyvas, Christos Kechris, Dionisios Melogiannidis, and Vangelis Maniatis. Philippe Auguin conducts a production by Nikos Petropoulos.

Performance dates: Jan. 20 – Feb. 13, 2022

Next up is Opera Composition Competition, as part of the celebration of the 2021 bicentennial of the Greek Revolution. Nicolas Vassiliou conducts the soloists and Orchestra of GNO.

Performance date: Jan. 22, 2022

Verdi’s “Otello” stars Cellia Costea as Desdemona, Tassis Christoyannis in the role of villain Iago, and Aleksandrs Antoņenko in the title role. The cast also includes Dimitris Paksoglou, Yannis Kalyvas, Petros Magoulas, Marinos Tarnanas, and Violetta Lousta. Stathis Soulis conducts a production by Robert Wilson.

Performance dates: Feb. 20 – March 6, 2022

Miltos Logiadis conducts the Orchestra and Soloists of the GNO for a performance of oratorio “Jus Soli.”

Performance date: March 13, 2022

Gounod’s “Faust” features Irina Lungu, Vassiliki Karayanni, Yanni Yannissis, Petros Magoulas, Dionysios Sourbis, Nikos Kotenidis, George Mattheakakis, Miranda Makrynioti, Diamanti Kritsotaki, Anna Agathonos, Chrysanthi Spitadi, and Ivan Magrì and Yannis Christopoulos in the title role. Pierre Dumoussaud conducts a production by Renato Zanella.

Performance date: April 6 – 17, 2022

Elias Voudouris conducts the Orchestra and Soloists of the GNO for presentations of Angelos Triantafyllou’s opera “Inland.” Nikos Karathanos is the director.

Performance dates: July 8 – 13, 2022

Herodium

Dimitris Tiliakos, Dimitris Paksoglou, Christina Poulitsi, Petros Magoulas, and Mary-Ellen Nesi star in Verdi’s “Rigoletto.” Lukas Karytinos conducts a production by Katerina Evangelatos.

Performance dates: June 2 – 11, 2022

Puccini’s “Tosca” will feature Ramón Vargas and Giorgio Berrugi as Mario Cavaradossi; Dimitri Platanias and Tassis Christoyannis as Scarpia; and Kristīne Opolais and Cellia Costea in the title role. Philippe Auguin conducts a production by Hugo de Ana.
