Manfred Honeck Appointed as San Francisco Symphony’s Festival Director

The San Francisco Symphony has announced the appointment of Manfred Honeck as Festival Director.

The newly created position, will see Honeck  begin in the 2028–29 season for a five-year term.

In this position, Honeck will conceive and lead a new annual, multi-week Festival exploring universal elements of the human experience through innovative performance concepts of iconic works from the core classical repertoire.

Honeck is currently in his 18th season as music director of the Pittsburgh Symphony with his tenure extended through the 2027–28 season. Under Honeck, the  orchestra has appeared at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, as well as the BBC Proms, Salzburg Festival, Musikfest Berlin, and Lucerne Festival. As a guest conductor, he has led the Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Dresden Staatskapelle, and Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, among others.
