
Mainz Staatstheater Announces 2026-27 Season
By Afton MarkayThe Mainz Staatstheater announces its 2026-27 lineup. Here are the opera and classical voice works.
A revival of Weill’s “The Threepenny Opera” continues into the 2026-27 season. Stage direction is by Jan Neumann, with set design by Cary Gayler. Ulrich Schneider is the lighting designer and Nini von Selzam is the costume designer. Samuel Hogarth and Andri Joël Harison share the role of musical director.
Performance Dates: March 2, 2026 – February 22, 2027
Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” with stage direction by Dominik Wilgenbus is next. Peter Engel is the set designer, Sandra Münchow is the costume designer, video is by Christoph Schödel, and lighting design is by Ulrich Schneider. Sebastian Hernandez-Laverny is the chorus master. Gabriel Venzago, Samuel Hogarth, and Andri Joël Harison are musical directors.
Performance Dates: March 14 – June 23, 2027
The children’s opera, “Picobello, ahoy!” by Bruno Franceschini makes its premiere.
Performance Dates: May 8 – 31, 2026
Verdi’s “Falstaff” is next.
Performance Dates: June 13– 25, 2026
A revival of Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Pirates of Penzance” is performed.
Performance Dates: August 22 – November 8, 2026
Wagner’s “Lohengrin” makes its Mainz’s premiere. Gabriel Venzago directs, Erik Raskopf is the staging and costume designer, and set and video are by Christoph Schubiger.
Performance Date: October 4, 2026
“In the Penal Colony” by Philip Glass is directed by Sophie Kochanowska. Andri Joël Harrison conducts.
Performance Date: October 24, 2026
“Ariadne on Naxos” by Richard Strauss is directed by Rahel Thiel with set design by Volker Thiele. Elisabeth Vogetseder is the costume designer. Gabriel Venzago is the musical director.
Performance Date: January 23, 2027
Paul-Johannes Kirschner and Paul Jonathan Irion’s “Meanwhile” makes its premiere.
Performance Date: February 2, 2027
Mary Finsterer’s “Antarctica” is conducted by Lea Ray.
Performance Date: April 16, 2027
Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” is directed by Jan Eßinger, with set design by Sonja Füsti and costumes by Benita Roth. Gabriel Venzago conducts.
Performance Date: April 30, 2027
Bruckner’s “Mass” in D minor for soloists, choir and orchestra is performed.
Performance Date: May 28 & 29, 2027
“Doctor Atomic” by John Adams premieres under the stage direction of Bernd Mottl. Friedrich Eggert is the set designer, Hakan T. Aslan is the choreographer, and Christoph Schödel is the videographer. Samuel Hogarth conducts.
Performance Date: June 13, 2027
“Opernnacht” will be held.
