Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Announces Opera Change for 85th Festival

The Maggio Musicale Fiorentino has announced a change to its upcoming festival.

The company said that it would replace Wagner’s “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg” with Verdi’s “Falstaff.”

Daniele Gatti will conduct the masterpiece in Sven-Eric Bechtolf’s 2021 production with a cast that includes Michael Volle (Falstaff), Markus Werba (Ford), and Claudia Huckle (Meg Page), who were already scheduled for “Meistersinger.” The cast will also include Eva Mei as Alice, Adriana Di Paola as Mrs. Quickly, and Sara Blanch as Nannetta.

The festival will also present Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” with Luca Micheletti (Don Giovanni), Markus Werba (Leporello), Jessica Pratt (Donna Anna), Anastasia Bartoli (Donna Elvira) and Benedetta Torre (Zerlina) and Verdi’s “Otello” led by (Otello), Anastasia Bartoli (Desdemona) and Luca Salsi (Jago).

The Maggio Musicale Fiorentino also announced a reduction in prices for the festival. The festival opens on April 22, 2023.
