Magdalena Kožená, Angel Blue, Natalya Romaniw, Malin Byström, Karen Cargill Headline Edinburgh International Festival 2022

The Edinburgh International Festival has announced 2022 season.

For the purposes of this article, we will focus solely on vocal and operatic performances.

Opera

Sir Don Runnicles will lead a performance of “Fidelio” starring Clay Hilley, Jennifer Davis, Markus Brück, Sir Willard White, Gideon Poppe, and Kim-Lillian Sterbel.

Performance Dates: August 10, 2022

Natalya Romaniw will lead “Rusalka” in a production directed by Jack Furness. Douglas Boyd conducts a cast that also includes Gerard Schneider, Musa Ngqungwana, Sky Ingram, Christine Rice, John Findon, Grace Durham, Marleana Devoe, Stephanie Wake-Edwards, and Heather Lowe.

Performance Dates: August 6-9, 2022

Malin Byström stars in “Salome” under the musical direction of Edward Gardner. She is joined by Johan Reuter, Gerhard Siegel, Katarina Dalayman, Bror Magnus Tødenes, and Hanna Hipp.

Concerts

Sir Donald Runnicles will lead “Carmina Burana” and Respighi’s “Pines of Rome.” The soloists include Meechot Marrero, Sunnyboy Dladla, and Thomas Lehman.

The BBC Singers, under Sofi Jeannin, will perform music by Martin, Mendelssohn, Eriks Esenvalds, Harris, Vaughan Williams, and Cecile Ore.

Anne Sofie von Otter joins forces with the Brooklyn Rider quartet for music by Schubert and Rufus Wainwright.

Performance Dates: August 10, 2022

Pianists Malcolm Martineau and Steven Osborne will perform alongside soprano Madison Nonoa, mezzo Jess Dandy, tenor Magnus Walker, and bass William Thomas in music by Brahms, Schubert, and Ravel.

François-Xavier Roth will lead Lili Boulanger’s “Faust et Hélène” starring Véronique Gens, Julier Behr, and Jean-Sébastian Bou. The concert will also incude Stravinsky’s ‘Rite of Spring.”

Golda Schultz and Jonathan Ware will perform music by Schumann, Mayer, Clarke, Boulanger, and Tagg.

Performance Dates: August 17, 2022

Zubin Mehta will lead a performance of music by Webern, Debussy, and Dvorak. Soprano Siobhan Stagg stars.

Performance Dates: August 19, 2022

Florian Boesch and pianist Malcolm Martineau will perform Schubert’s “Winterreise.”

Performance Dates: August 19, 2022

Semyon Bychkov will conduct music by Dvorak, Martinu, and Janácek. Soloists include Evelina Dobraceva, Lucie Hilsherová, Ales Briscein, and Jan Martiník. The program will also feature pianists Katia Labèque and Marielle Labèque.

Performance Dates: August 20, 2022 

Linda Watson will be the soloist in Mahler’s Third Symphony, which will be conducted by Thomas Söndergård.

Performance Dates: August 23, 2022

Iestyn Davies and Neil Davies will headline Händel’s “Saul.” Bernard Labadie conducts The English Concert.

Performance Dates: August 24, 2022

Yannick Nézet-Séguin leads a performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with Angel Blue, Karen Cargill, Christopher Maltman, and Andrew Staples.

Performance Dates: August 25, 2022

Magdalena Kožená and Yefim Bronfman will perform music by Brahms, Mussorgsky, Shostakovich, and Bartok. 

Performance Dates: August 26, 2022

Karen Cargill, Andrew Staples, and Iain Paterson will perform Elgar’s “The Dream of Gerontius.” Sir Andrew Davis conducts the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Edinburgh Festival Chorus.

Performance Dates: August 28, 2022

Digital Performances 

Fatma Said will perform music by Mozart, Ravel, de Falla, and Lorca alongside pianist Malcolm Martineau.
