For a big chunk of the world, this weekend is all about the “Avengers: Endgame.” But that doesn’t mean there won’t be time to head over to the opera house. So here’s the five operas we highly recommend for opera lovers still planning on having their weekend dose of their favorite artform.

Ariadne Auf Naxos – Teatro alla Scala, Italy

Krassimira Stoyanova takes on the title role in Strauss’ work with Sabine Devieilhe, as Zerbinetta. Michael König as Bacchus, and Markus Werba as the Music Master.

Superintendent Alexander Pereira makes his debut on the stage of La Scala in the spoken part of the Major Domo in Frederic Wake-Walker’s new production. Franz Welser-Möst conducts.

Idomeneo – Teatro Massimo di Palermo, Italy

Rene Barbera sings the title role in Mozart’s epic opera alongside Carmela Remigio, Eleonora Buratto, Aya Wakizono, and Giovanni Sala. Daniel Cohen conducts Pier Luigi Pizzi’s production.

Il Viaggio a Reims – Bolshoi Theatre, Russian

Tugan Sokhiev conducts an ensemble cast in Rossini’s comedy that includes Olga Seliverstova, Anna Goryachova, Olga Pudova, Hulkar Sabirova, Sergey Romanovsky, Diego Godoy, David Menéndez, Nicola Ulivieri,  José Fardilha, Alexander Miminoshvili, Pyotr Migunov, Bekhzod Davronov, Yevgenia Vasilchuk, Irina Rubtsova, Yulia Mazurova, Ivan Maximeyko, Valery Gilmanov, and Ivan Maximeyko.

Falstaff – Teatro Real, Spain

Roberto de Candia and Misha Kiria rotate the title role in Verdi’s”Falstaff” in a new production by Laurent Pelly. The two are joined by Joel Prieto as Fenton, Valeriano Lanchas as Pistola; Rebecca Evans and Raquel Lojendio alternating as Alice Ford; Simone Piazzola and Àngel Òdena sharing the role of Ford; Ruth Iniesta and Rocío Pérez  as Nannetta; and Daniela Barcellona and Teresa Iervolino sharing the role of Miss Quickly. Daniele Rustioni conducts.

Man of La Mancha – English National Opera, United Kingdom

Kelsey Grammer, Danielle de Niese, Nicholas Lyndhurst, Cassidy Janson, and Peter Polycarpou star in the hit musical featuring the popular song ” The Impossible Dream.” David White conducts.
