Madison Lyric Stage to Present Puccini-Schoenberg Double Bill

By David Salazar

The Madison Lyric Stage is set to present “Suor Angelica” in a double bill with “Erwartung” starting on March 26, 2020

The performances, which will take place the Deacon John Grave House in Madison, Connecticut, will be directed by Marc Deaton, who will star in the Schoenberg piece.

Meanwhile, Allison Waggener will take on the title role of the Puccini opera, which was written by Forzano.

“This unique double bill champions great music drama from two diverse master composers of the 20th century – the romantic Italian Giacomo Puccini, composer of ‘La Bohème’ and ‘Madama Butterfly,’ and Arnold Schoenberg, the Viennese father of atonality – so completely different in their musical styles, yet composing during the same years,” said Deaton, artistic director of Madison Lyric Stage, in a press release.

“This production exposes the cruelty that we all have within us. It takes place in Vienna at the turn of the century in an asylum managed by the fictional Sisters of Mercy.”
