Lyric Opera of Orange County Announces Staged World Premiere of ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’

By David Salazar

Lyric Opera of Orange County has announced the staged world premiere production of “The Yellow Wallpaper.”

The showcase is set to take place on Oct. 24-26, 2025, at Phantom Projects Theater at La Habra Debot in La Habra, CA.

Brooke deRosa and Diana Farrell’s “The Yellow Wallpaper” is based on Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s short story of the same name. The opera is set against the backdrop of the oppressive “rest cure,” a 19th-century treatment for women suffering from so-called hysteria. It delves into themes of women’s autonomy over their bodies and health, then and now, and explores a woman’s psychological journey from confinement to liberation.

Cynthia Stokes directs, and Carl Pantle conducts. Iva Lohman, Brooke deRosa, Jill Morgan Brenner, Diana Farrell, Sergio Mazo, and Michael O’Halloran star.

The company previously showcased the piece in a concert premiere this past January at Carnegie Hall.
