Lyric Opera of Kansas City Postpones Remaining Productions, Announces Digital Fall Programming

By Logan Martell

Lyric Opera of Kansas City has announced revisions for its 2020-21 season.

The company has been forced to postpone its remaining mainstage productions of “The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs” and “Carmen” until they can be presented in a safe manner.

The company will instead create new digital programming for the fall through new initiatives.

The first of these is “Soundscapes in the City,” a series of free, outdoor concerts featuring company artists performing favorites from opera and musical theatre, with audience members encouraged to bring chairs or blankets and pack picnics.

Next is “Opera in Eight Parts,” an eight-episode digital series which will shed light on the history and development of opera as an art form, hosted by Dr. William Everett and Dr. Alison DeSimone of UMKC and Dr. Martin Nedbal of KU. Episodes will include musical excerpts performed by artists, as well as illustrations from the collection of the Nelson-Atkins Museum, curated by Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs William Keyse Randolph.

Finally, Lyric Opera of Kansas City will present a new production of Menotti’s “Amahl and the Night Visitors.” This holiday classic will utilize newly-created puppets designed by puppet master Paul Mesner, and will run from December 3 – 6, 2020.
