Lucia Lucas to Make South Florida Debut

By David Salazar

Lucia Lucas is set to kick off the second year of the Generation Venetian Arts Society’s critically acclaimed Café Society Pride series. The Berlin, Germany resident will make her South Florida debut with a performance of an original program entitled “In Her Own Voice…An Autobiographical Salon Concert.”

Pianist Dr. Casey Robards will accompany Lucas.

In a statement, William Riddle, founder and artistic director, said, “This is an extraordinary autobiographical Salon concert which will feature much more than just Lucia’s stentorian voice. Lucas will share her journey from childhood to her international career as a male dramatic baritone. She will also discuss her historic transition which resulted in her becoming the first female baritone in history to achieve global acclaim in main stage leading roles with some of the world’s leading opera houses.”

The organization’s Café Society Pride series debuted in 2022 and was inspired by the real-life “beautiful people” and “bright young things” who gathered in fashionable New York city cafés and restaurants beginning at the end of Prohibition in 1933. This inaugural season specifically celebrated members of the LGBTQ community and presented LGBTQ artists whose life and work promotes the beauty and importance of acceptance and inclusion.

Lucas made history performing in the lead role of the Tulsa Opera’s production of “Don Giovanni” which was the first time a transgender opera singer performed with a leading United States Opera company.
