Luca Salsi, Anna Netrebko & José Cura Highlight New CD/DVD Releases

This week two new audio recordings of rarely performed works are being released, as are two DVDs of performances that were met with acclaim last summer.

Stabat Mater

Gloriae Dei Cantores performs Arvo Pärt’s acclaimed “Stabat Mater.” Richard K. Pugsley conducts the famed masterwork which also includes a number of major choral works. Naxos and GDC Recordings unveil the upcoming release.

Tributo a la Reina Batata

Star tenor José Cura alongside Pianist Giulio Laguzzi have released María Elena Walsh’s “Canciones para niños de cero a 100 años de edad…” The new recording was made by Cura’s record label with Recording technician Irene Vinader. Artwork was provided by Zoe Cura.

Il Trovatore 

C Major Releases Franco Zeffirelli’s 2001 production, which was performed in 2019 as an unplanned memorial to the legendary director, who had died just two weeks earlier. The event is also special as it represents the Verona debut of famed soprano Anna Netrebko. The soprano is joined by Yusif Eyvazov, Dolora Zajick, and Luca Salsi, one of the world’s great Verdi baritones. Pier Giorgio Morandi leads the Orchestra and Chorus of the Arena di Verona. Simon Boccanegra

C Major releases Salzburg Festival’s production of Verdi’s “Simon Boccanegra.” The production was directed by Andreas Kriegenburg and conducted by Valery Gergiev. Luca Salsi also stars in this new release and takes on the title role with Marina Rebeka as Amelia and René Pape as Fiesco. Star tenor Charles Castronovo rounds out the cast as Gabriele Adorno.
