
Long Beach Opera Unveils 2025-26 Season

The season opened with “The Turn of the Screw” at the UCLA Freud Playhouse. James Darrah directed the opera, and Rakefet Hak conducted.
Performance Dates: Nov. 20 & 21, 2025
In 2026, the company will present “Crash Out Queens: A Tiffany Townsend Recital” at Altar Society in Long Beach.
Soprano Tiffany Townsend will present a recital that “explores the psychological landscapes of women in opera who face moments of reckoning – reframing iconic arias through a modern lens to reveal their complexity and humanity.” The recital also features scenic design by Prairie T. Triuvuth as well as other dance and instrumental collaborators that will be announced at a later date.
Performance Dates: Jan. 31 & Feb. 1, 2026
The company also revealed that it is developing “The Passion of Neil,” a new opera based on Nell Theobard, the model who was obsessed with Birgit Nilsson. The opera features a libretto by Lisa Teasley and will be workshopped in 2027.
There will also be a film project, “The Nubian Word for Flowers,” as well as performances of “Svadba,” and “BERIO: Fragments.” The former is a six-voice a cappella opera by Ana Sokolovic directed by Anderson Nunnelley and the latter is a project in development that explores incomplete and rare works by Berio that explore a soprano’s descent into madness. James Darrah directs, and Christopher Roundtree conducts.
