Long Beach Opera to Present ‘Bye Bye Butterfly’
By David SalazarAfter announcing the cancelation of “Asunción” a few weeks back, Long Beach Opera has announced its replacement in the form of “Bye Bye Butterfly.”
The experimental work by Pauline Oliveros will take place at the Los Angeles Theatre Center in Downtown LA on July 20 and 21, 2024 and features Habin Kim, Kathryn Shuman, Laurel Irene, Leela Subramaniam, and Orson Van Gay II.
At the core of the work is a live new version of “Bye Bye Buttrfly,” which was originally created as a two-channel tape, eight-minute-long composition that served as a deconstruction and transofmration of Puccini’s famed opera “Madama Butterfly.” There will be five other Oliveros-composed opera experiences surrounding this work.
All the operatic experiments will be arranged by Danian Donovan Thomas, who will also be the music director on the production.
”Bye Bye Butterfly” is presented in collaboration with Latino Theater Company and East LA Creative.
