The Nuova Consonanza Festival will present a recital in honor of Cathy Berberian on Dec. 9, 2023.

Titled “La tua voce è quest’anima diffusa, the showcase will feature soprano Ljuba Bergamelli as she takes on music for solo voice by such composers as John Cage, Domenico Guaccero, Morton Feldman, Pasquale Corrado, Elliott Carter, Georges Aperghis, Alessando Solbiati, Vittorio Montalti, Maria Vencenza Cabizza, and Luciano Berio.

“Since the 1950s, Cathy Berberian has initiated the liberation of the vocal body and the affirmation of the theater of the voice,” said Bergamelli in an official press statement issued by the festival. “Her taste for the word and for vocal theater make her a unique artist, endowed with an unforgettable charisma and stage presence, with a vocal and mental flexibility that allows her to move from one style and repertoire to another in surprising way. In those years she became a muse and living laboratory for many artists of the so-called Avant-garde, including Berio, Cage, Bussotti, Maderna, who wrote expressly for her and for her chameleonic vocal personality.”

Bergamelli recently presented a program of folk songs at the Ravenna Festival in Italy and has also performed in concerts at the Teatro Carlo Felice and with hte Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto.
