Lisette Oropesa & Benjamin Bernheim Win Top Prizes at Opera Awards

The Opera Awards which took place at the Bayerische Staatsoper on Oct. 2 has announced its 2024 winners.

The top prize of Opera Company went to the Komische Oper Berlin while Simone Young took home the coveted Conductor of the Year award.

Lisette Oropesa won the Female Singer of the Year while Benjamin Bernheim was awarded the Male Singer of the Year Award. Arturo Chacón Cruz took home the Reader’s Choice Award and Arnheiður Eiríksdóttir won the Rising Star Award.

The Savonlinna Opera Festival was crowned Festival of the Year while Christof Loy won Director of the Year.

Other winners included Christina Scheppelman for Leadership in Opera Award and Rufus Didwiszus for Designer of the Year. The Finnish National Opera was recognized with the Sustainability Award while the Opera For Peace took home the Equal Opportunities & Impact Award.

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation was also recognized with the Philanthropy in Opera Award while “Iphigénie en Aulide / en Tauride” at the Festival d’Aix won the New Production. The Rediscovered Work Award was given to Theater an der Wien for Salieri’s “Kublai Khan” while the World Premiere opera prize was given to Eötvös’s “Valuska” which took place at the Hungarian State Opera.

The Complete Opera Recording was awarded to Bertin’s “Fausto” while the solo recording was presented to Michael Spyres’ “In the Shadows.”

During the ceremony, Jose Van Dam was recognized with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
