Lise Davidsen & Laetitia Grimaldi Lead New CD/DVD Releases

This week audiences will get to hear two new recordings of complete operas and will also get to discover a new voice in the opera world.

Here is a look at this week’s new releases.

The Snow Queen

Bayerisches Staatsoper Recordings releases Hans Abrahamsen’s “The Snow Queen” on DVD. The opera, which is an adaptation of the classic Hans Christian Andersen tale, stars soprano Barbara Hannigan, Rachael Wilson, Katarina Dalayman, Caroline Wettergreen, and Peter Rose. Cornelius Meister leads the Bayerischer Staatsopernchor and the Bayerisches Staatsorchester in the production by Andreas Kriegenburg.

Fidelio

Opus Arte releases the Royal Opera’s new production of “Fidelio,” starring Lise Davidsen in her role debut as Leonore. Tobias Kratzer directs the production which also stars David Butt Philip, Simon Neal, Georg Zeppenfeld, Amanda Forsythe, and Robin Tritschler. Antonio Pappano conducts the production that OperaWire called, “monumental.”

Ombres: Women Composers of La Belle Époque

BIS releases the new recital by Laetitia Grimaldi who explores songs by Mélanie Bonis, Cécile Chaminade, Armande de Polignac, Juliette Folville, Pauline Viardot, Marguerite Béclard d’Harcourt, Hélène-Frédérique de Faye-Jozin, Gabrielle Ferrari, and Augusta Holmès. The French-born, Juilliard-trained Grimaldi began her vocal studies with the great Teresa Berganza and has been mentored by, among others, Sir Thomas Allen, Dame Emma Kirkby, and Matthias Goerne.
