Lighthouse International Film Society to Present ‘The Anatomy of Ecce Homo’
By David SalazarThe Lighthouse International Film Society will host a public screening of “The Anatomy of the Ecce Homo” on Thursday, Nov. 20.
The hour-long Spanish-language documentary, presented with English subtitles, revisits the 2012 “Ecce Homo” fresco restoration incident and examines how Fowler + Flack’s comic opera “Behold The Man” became part of the story’s unexpected cultural legacy.
The film traces the journey from the moment the altered fresco first drew international attention to the development and Las Vegas premiere of “Behold The Man.” It combines archival media coverage, interviews with residents and witnesses, and clips from earlier stage performances.
The opera, which premiered in 2023, is based on the true story of Cecilia Giménez‘s botched restoration of the “Ecce Homo” fresco in Borja, Spain, which became a viral sensation on the internet. “Behold The Man” explores the aftermath of Giménez’s restoration, following her journey from being shamed and ostracized by her community to regaining her reputation as curious tourists flocked to see the “restored” fresco.
The evening will open with a brief introduction to the “Ecce Homo Incident,” followed by a short Q&A after the screening.
