
Liceu’s Artistic Director To Leave During 2019-20 Season
By Francisco SalazarChristina Scheppelmann, who was named Artistic director at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in 2014, is set leave her position with the company during the 2019-20 season.
Ever since taking the position in June 2014, Scheppelmann had numerous achievements including upping the attendance to 86 percent during the 2015-16 and 2016-17 season. She also worked on the OFF Liceu project, which has helped bring more contemporary works to the theater.
She also helped bring Terry Gilliam’s “Benvenuto Cellini” and Alex Olle’s “Tristan und Isolde” and was able to ensure a superstar cast for “Andrea Chénier,” which consisted of Jonas Kaufmann, Sondra Radvanovsky, and Carlos Álvarez. Additionally, she was also responsible for bringing a number of international superstars to the fore, while continuing to promote national singers.
The artistic director has already programmed the 2019-20 season, which will open with a new production of “Turandot” by director Franc Aleu.
The company has yet to announce a new replacement as of yet.
