Lianna Haroutounian, Jonathan Tetelman & Christopher Ainslie Highlight Malmö Opera’s 2019-20 Season

The Malmö Opera in Southern Sweden has announced its plans for the 2019-20 season.

Sebastian Fagerlund’s “Höstsonaten (Autumn Sonata)” gets to open the new season. The conductor will be Patrick Rinborg and the promising cast will include Charlotte Hellekant, Erika Sunnegårdh, Fredrik Zetterström, Helena Juntunen and Nicholas Söderlund. “Höstsonaten” was originally created in 2017 at the National Finnish Opera and is based on the movie by Ingmar Bergman by the same name.

Performance Dates: September 13-28, 2019

A new production of Puccini’s “Tosca” by Sofia Jupither will follow, with a strong cast including Lianna Haroutounian, Simge Büyükedes and up-and-coming American soprano Shelly Jackson alternating in the title role. Tenors Jonathan Tetelman and Dimitris Paksoglou will take turns as Mario Cavaradossi while Vladislav Sulimsky and Anthony Michaels-Moore will sing Scarpia. Conductors Steven Sloane and Alexander Joel will split duties in the pit.

Performance Dates: December 20, 2019 – February 16, 2020

Offenbach’s operetta “Orphée aux Enfers” gets a run in Swedish. The production is by Elisabeth Linton and the cast will include Rickard Söderberg, Martin Vanberg, Eir Inderhaug, Loa Falkman and Maria Streijffert. The conductors will be Tobias Rinborg and Jakob Hultberg,

Performance Dates: February 14 – May 10, 2020

Peter Halls’ 1981 Gyndebourne production of Britten’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” will be presented to close the season. South African countertenor Christopher Ainslie will be Oberon and Elisabeth Einarsdottir will sing Titania. The cast will also include Ole Aleksander Bang, Sebastian Duran, Tuva Semmingsen, Sigrid Boe and Zachary Altman, under the baton of German conductor Anja Bihlmaier.

Performance Dates: March 27 – May 30, 2020
