Leonardo Capalbo & Pumeza Matshikiza Lead Opera Ballet Vlaanderen’s 2019-20 Season

Opera Vlaanderen has announced its 2019-20 season featuring a diverse array of repertoire from repertory staples to world premieres. For this article, we have only included the opera performances.

The season opens with a five-act French version of Verdi’s “Don Carlos” with Alejo Perez conducting. Leonardo Capalbo makes his company and role debut of this version, playing the title role alongside Mary Elizabeth Williams, Andreas Bauer Kanabas, Kartal Karagedik, Raehann Bryce-Davis, and Roberto Scandiuzzi. Johan Simons directs the new production.

Performance Dates: Sept. 19-Oct. 30, 2019

Craig Colclough sings the title role of Verdi’s “Macbeth” with Katia Pellegrino as Lady Macbeth, Tareq Nazmi as Banco, and Najmiddin Mavlyanov as Macduff.

Paolo Carignani conducts the production by Michael Thalheimer.

Performance Dates: Nov. 8- Dec. 1, 2019

Pumeza Matshikiza and Tineke Van Ingelgem share the title role of Dvorak’s “Rusalka” in a new production by Alan Lucien Øyen.

Elmar Gilbertsson, Mykhailo Malafii, Goderdzi Janelidze, Maria Riccarda Wesseling, and Karen Vermeiren star under the baton of conductor Giedrė Šlekytė.

Performance Dates: Dec. 12, 2019-Jan. 23, 2020

Leigh Melrose, Kai Rüütel Vuvu Mpofu, Michael J. Scott, Daniel Arnaldos, Nabil Suliman, Leon Košavić,  Justin Hopkins, Annelies Van Gramberen, and Ivan Thirion star in  Schreker’s “Der Schmied von Gent.”

The opera will be directed by Ersan Mondtag and conducted by Alejo Perez.

Performance Dates: Feb. 2-March 1, 2020

Alain Platel’s “C(H)OEURS” gets an update after its world premiere in 2012 at the Teatro Real. The work uses chorus and ten dancers from les ballets C de la B ballets in a socially committed performance set to music by Verdi and Wagner.

Performance Dates: March 20-April 8, 2020

Mozart’s “Così Fan Tutte” gets a revival with Ida Falk-Winland, Stephanie Lauricella, Edwin Crossley-Mercer, Mingjie Lei, Maria Céleng, and Simone Del Savio. Marie Jacquot and Clemens Jüngling rotate at the podium.

Performance Dates: April 23-May 24, 2020

Claude Debussy and the Flemish composer Annelies Van Parys’s music is set to be used in a new opera entitled “Usher” with a libretto Gaea Schoeters.

Marit Strindlund conducts the production by Philippe Quesn. Ola Eliasson, Alexandra Büchel, Vincenzo Neri, and Daniel Arnaldos star.

Performance Dates: May 8-17, 2020

Schumann’s “Faust” gets a new production with a cast that includes Tobias Staab, Brian Mulligan, Eleanor Lyons, Mikhail Timoshenko, and Lore Binon. Conductor Philippe Herreweghe leads the production by Julian Rosefeldt.

Performance Dates: June 14-July 2, 2020

Ravel’s “Shéhérazade / L’heure espagnole” get two performances conducted by Alejo Perez with mezzo Raphaële Green in a production by Tom Goossens.

Performance Dates: July 10 & 11, 2020
