Leonardo Caimi Headlines Polish National Opera’s ‘Werther’

By Francisco Salazar

On Oct. 8 and 10, 2021, the Polish National Opera is set to revive Massenet’s “Werther.”

The production by Willy Decker will star Leonardo Caimi in the title role and Iryna Zhytynska as Charlotte with Patrick Fournillier.

The classic production focuses on the psychological aspects of Werther’s obsessive love with the sets by Wolfgang Gussmann expressing the imprisonment of the titular character’s own mind. Stefan Heinrichs will direct the revival of the production.

In anticipation of the opening of the production, both Caimi and Zhytynska will present a conference talking about the production of the opera.

Caimi is a well-known tenor that has performed the Teatro alla Scala, the Salzburg Festival, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Teatro Regio di Torino, Teatro Real in Madrid, and Michigan Opera Theatre.

Zhytynska has performed at the Teatro Real de Madrid, Teatro la Maestranza Sevilla, Teatro Arriaga Bilbao, Finnish National Opera, Azerbaijan State Opera Baku, Romanian National Opera, and Wrocław Opera.
