Leo Nucci, Stéphane Degout, Anna Pirozzi Among Major Stars At Opéra De Lyon’s 2018-19 Season

The Opéra de Lyon has recently announced its offerings for the 2018-19 season, which will feature staged productions, concerts, and the Opera Underground series.

Here’s a look at what’s on offer for next season.

Opera

Boito’s “Mefistofele” opens the season with the company’s Music Director Daniele Rustioni leading the musical forces. Evgenia Muraveva takes on the two lead roles of Margherita and Elena with John Relyea as the title character and Paul Groves as Faust. Alex Ollé and La Fura dels Baus direct the new production.

Performance Dates: Oct. 11 – 23, 2018

Leo Nucci, Anna Pirozzi, Riccardo Zanellato, Antonio Poli, and Enkelejda Shkoza perform alongside Rustioni in a concert performance of Verdi’s “Nabucco.”

Performance Dates: Nov. 5 & 7, 2018

Ravel’s “L’Heure Espagnole” will get a production directed by James Bonas with musical direction by Jonathan Stockhammer.

Performance Dates: Nov. 17-21, 2018

Handel’s “Rodelinda” will be directed by Claus Guth with musical direction by Stefano Montanari. Sabina Puértolas takes on the title role with Krystian Adam as Grimoaldo and Sara Mingardo as Eduige.

Performance Dates: Dec. 15, 2018 – Jan. 1, 2019

Janacek’s “From the House of the Dead” takes the stage with a cast that includes Sir Willard White, Stefan Margita, Nicky Spence, Graham Clark, and Ivan Ludlow, among others. The production will be directed by Krzysztof Warlikowski with Alejo Pérez in charge of musical direction.

Performance Dates: Jan. 21-Feb. 2, 2019

Boris Blacher’s rare “Roméo et Juliette” gets performances conducted by Emmanuel Calef and directed by Jean Lacornerie.

Performance Dates: Feb. 8-15, 2019

Tchaikovsky’s “The Enchantress” appears with Rustioni leading such artists as Ksenia Vyaznikova, Migran Agadzhanyan, Piotr Micinski, Mairam Sokolova, and Oleg Budaratskiy. Andriy Zholdak directs.

Performance Dates: March 15-31, 2019

Purcell’s “Dido and Aeneas” will get a showcase alongside a jazz suite by Kalle Kalime inspired by Dido’s famous lament “Remember Me.” Alix Le Saux and Guillaume Andrieux star as the title characters with David Marton directing and Pierre Bleuse conducting.

Performance Dates: March 16-30, 2019

Monteverdi’s “Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria” will get a showcase in a production by William Kentridge that features the Handspring Puppet Company and the singers of Studio de l’Opéra de Lyon.

Performance Dates: March 29-April 3, 2019

Isabelle Aboulker’s “Les Enfants du Levant” takes the stage with Karine Locatelli as music director and Pauline Laidet as the stage director.

Performance Dates: April 6-13, 2019

“Lessons in Love and Violence” makes its Lyon debut with direction by Katie Mitchell. Alexandre Block conducts an ensemble that features Stéphane Degout, Georgia Jarman, Gyula Orendt, Peter Hoare, and Samuel Boden, among others.

Performance Dates: May 14-26, 2019

Jacques Offenbach’s “Barbe-Bleue” caps off the season in a production by Laurent Pelly that stars Yann Beuron, Carl Ghazarossian, Jennifer Courcier, Héloïse Mas, Christophe Gay, and Nabil Suliman, among others. Michele Spotti conducts.

Performance Dates: June 14-July 5, 2019

Concerts

Sopranos Sandrine Piau and Véronique Gens appear in two different concerts.
