Legendary Mezzo-Soprano Marjana Lipovšek Holds Masterclass In Belgrade

Legendary mezzo-soprano Marjana Lipovšek and Alfred Burgstaller held a Masterclass for young opera singers in Belgrade on Nov. 14 through 17, with a final concert on Nov. 17.

The masterclass by Lipovšek and Burgstaller was organized by Professor Ljubiša Jovanović of the Faculty of Music at the University of Arts in Belgrade while Professor Katarina Jovanović made the final selection of young artists who would participate in the masterclass.

Pianist Jelena Polović Šiljeg accompanied young artists sopranos Mina Gligorić, Biljana Jovanović, Maja Dabović, Branislava Podrumac and Milica Milić, mezzo-soprano Zorica Beloica, baritones Strahinja Tričković and Vladimir Jakšić, and bass-baritone Milan Obradović. The final concert saw arias from “Le Nozze di Figaro,” “La Bohème,” “Werther,” “Don Giovanni,” “Die Zauberflöte,” as well as works by Schubert, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Marx and R. Strauss.

Lipovšek started her career at the Wiener Staatsoper and became regular guest artist at the biggest opera stages in the world including the  Metropolitan Opera House, Opéra National de Paris, Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Teatro alla Scala, Staatsoper Hamburg and Bayerische Staatsoper. She also appeared at the Bregenz Festival and Salzburg Festival. Her roles included Dorabella in “Cosí fan Tute,” Octavian in “Der Rosenkavalier,” Marina in “Boris Godunov,” Ulrica in “Un Ballo in Maschera,” “Azucena” in “Il Trovatore,” Brängane in “Tristan und Isolde,” Amneris in “Aida,” Eboli in “Don Carlo,” Die Amme in “Die Frau Ohne Schatten,” Klytämnestra in “Elektra,” and Dalila in “Samson et Dalila.”
Lipovšek also worked with renowned conductors Claudio Abbado, Daniel Barenboim, Bernard Haitink, James Levine, Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti and Kent Nagano.
